Print Story Rest In Peace, Miss Kitty
Death

Today was the last day of Miss Kitty's life.

The tumor took its toll, she fought the good battle, but we always knew it was one she was doomed to lose.

I left on a business trip Monday morning. Missy wasn't doing so well then, she was peeing in the house, we had her on antibiotics for an apparent bladder infection (unable to confirm because they couldn't get any urine out of her), she was listless and not cleaning herself any more.

She refused food and water while I was gone. Mrs. FT took her to the vet yesterday and they gave Missy a steroid shot to see if that would help. I came home today (Thursday), we put some food in front of her, but she just licked at it, then she got up, stumbled, poked her nose in her water bowl a couple times, but didn't drink, then walked a couple steps and laid down.

We took her to the vet and found she had lost a pound in the last week (from 13.5 to 12.5 lbs) and of course was very dehydrated. The vet said the only thing we could try would be to ultrasound her tumor, then *IF* there was fluid build up in a place they could reach with a needle, they could try to suck the fluid out. Of course they'd have to use anesthesia to stick the needle in, and there was a better than even chance she wouldn't even survive the anesthesia. The vet felt there was less than a 10% chance they could really help her, and even then it would mean regular visits (and anesthesia) to have the fluid drained.

So we decided it was time. They put an IV in and administered the drugs. The vet had said it could take up to a minute for her heart to stop beating, but the vet barely got her stethoscope under Missy before her heart stopped. It couldn't have been more than 10 seconds.

We know we made the right choice. She was suffering, and quality of life was gone. It doesn't make it any easier though. She was a trooper, and we had her far longer than we thought we would when we first found the tumor.

Rest in peace, Missy, rest in peace.

She was so pretty. by muchagecko (4.00 / 3) #1 Fri Oct 05, 2007 at 01:52:41 AM EST
What a beautiful face.

I'm sorry for your loss, but glad that you shared her with us.

Yes, she was pretty. Quite the snuggle-bug for Mrs. FT as well. She is missed.

Between you, BadDoggie and some friends of mine all losing their cats recently, my critter must be wondering why she is getting all this extra attention from me:(

Attention by FlightTest (2.00 / 0) #13 Fri Oct 05, 2007 at 01:22:59 PM EST
We have two left, both males. One has become our daughters cat. That one really couldn't get any more attention than he already gets. The other is quite the wanderer. He'll get some more attention, but he doesn't tolerate it well, so we'll likely end up with a few bites and scratches.

She was a beautiful cat, and she was obviously very much loved. My best to you and your family. :(

She was so very much loved. At least she got to pass with her head on Mrs. FT's arm, where she so often slept.

Our cats are getting older and I'm dreading this part of our relationship.

Has anybody seen my clue? I know I had it when I came in here.

Hopefully we won't have to face this again for quite some time, the boys are quite a bit younger.

I spent the rest of the evening (and some today) thinking "Did we make the right decision"? Mentally I'm sure that we did, there just were no positive signs. Emotionally I guess you're never sure.

Absolute, complete and total suckage by BadDoggie (4.00 / 2) #11 Fri Oct 05, 2007 at 11:44:59 AM EST
With only 10% odds I probably would've also given in. The fact that she was clearly suffering was the clincher. Will there be enough kittens to fill the recent HuSi demand?

Yeah, we had said when we found the tumor that we'd only treat it as long as she wasn't suffering. There didn't seem to be a way to continue treatment with any kind of quality of life for her.

Mrs. FT already wants another one, because neither of the males cozies to her the way Missy did. I asked her to wait a bit and see if she still felt that way in a month or two. Plus of course there's no guarantee a new cat would snuggle with her.

Mrs. FT is taking it much harder, Miss Kitty was much more her cat, and often slept on or next to her.
