Ranting

Washing your car to make it rain doesn't work.

Mostly incoherent within. Kinda mostly a I-ain't-dead diary.

I actually do read/lurk here quite a bit. Just either too busy or too blah to comment.
So we're about 10,000 inches below normal for rainfall this season. Gonna be a nasty fire season this year.
We went to Fr. Bragg (CA) for our 10 year anniversary last month. Drove, because we wanted to see some sights along the way. It was nice to have the time to ourselves, but we over-planned it so we ended up with almost no "free" time. I'm of two minds about that ... if we'd left free time we probably would have done nothing during that time, and there really was nothing that we did that either of us wish we had skipped. On the other hand, we didn't come back very rested, either.
Ack! Stupid cat just brought us a small rat. Yuck. At least it was dead so we didn't have a mouse running around the house like last time. Now he's looking for it.
Work is interesting, we have a ton to do over the next couple of years, with significant milestones every month or so. The job is neat, real engineering. The company I'm working for is growing, our product has uses in a few different markets, and the company has very large segments of our markets. So even if the project I'm working on went away, there are plenty of other projects to work on.

Hanging out here has had one major bonus for my job: my boss, and a lot of the people in the company (and surprisingly, across our industry as a whole) are UKian. As a result of many of you, I'm familiar with a some of the UKian idioms, which has somewhat impressed my boss, since I seem to be the only yank there that has heard any of them.

For now, I'm salaried non-exempt, so I get paid for my overtime. But working 50 hour weeks AND going to school four nights a week is extremely tiring. I'm hoping my current semi-depressed numb state is due to just being temporarily overwhelmed at work+school+life and that eliminating school will ratchet down the stress level enough to un-numb me a bit.

Speaking of school, this is going to be my last semester of classes. "All" I have to do now is my thesis. We came up with a topic, and it looks like the vast majority of the work will be able to be done at work. Actually, most of it will, since it requires programs costing multiple thousands of dollars.
We bought Mrs. FT a new computer. She decided she wanted a laptop so we got her a Dell. It's a Core 2 Duo processor, 2 gigs of RAM, 17" widescreen, and XP Pro. It'll be far faster than her current desktop, which is an 1.2 GHz Athlon with 512 meg (Same as mine, actually). It'll be delivered Tuesday. Unfortunately, I didn't stop to think that it would be shipped signature required, so now I have to see if I can get it either redirected to Mrs. FT's work or held for her to pick up. Failing that my parents have agreed to come down and wait for it.
I wish I could say I've done a lot of flying lately, but I haven't. See school and work above. A consultant at work is in pre-buy for a Cessna Cardinal RG. He lives in Denver, so he's going to use it to commute for the next year or two until he decides whether to move here or not.
We were matched with an older girl for adoption, but it fell through. At first she was excited to meet us, then after our home study got completed, she decided not to. Kinda disappointing, but it happens. We have another possible match, we'll see how that goes. They caution us against saying much about any of the kids, and that does make sense, so we'll err on the side of caution and try not to say much at all.
Okay, it's past my bed time. We'll try to be around more, but we certainly make no promises for the near future.
Life is short, fly fast!
